Divx Stage6 Hacked – User Account Information Made Public!
At approximately 4am on February 9th, 2008, Stage6, a popular HD video sharing website, was hacked by an unknown group.
Visitors to Stage6′s main page were redirected to multiple “shock” sites, like the famous goatse and 2girls1cup.
A pop up was added stating that the site had been hacked by Ebaumsworld. It’s unknown if they had any involvement with the hacking.
Several threads on Ebaumsworld and various forums have been deleted regarding the attack. Posts like “Why did you do this?”, “What did they do to you?”, but also threads with verbal insults against the site.
This incident lasted about two and a half hours before a site maintenance notice was put up by the Stage6 admin team.
The main site of Stage6 was replaced with a message stating “We’re unable to service your request.”.
UPDATE: Stage6 has announced they will permanently shut down February 28th 2008.

Wikipedia reports that “A partial list of email addresses and passwords for several thousand Stage6 users was released by hackers shortly after the attack began, in the form of a plain text file posted to 4chan’s random board. The file has since been removed from the site.”
Users that had registered a new account at Stage 6 between December 11th, 2007 and February 9th, 2008 were mainly those who were affected. There is talk, however, that the hacker(s) may have had access to the entire Stage6 user database.

Stag6 was launched in 2006 by Divx and is currently in beta form. Many sites utilize Stage6 for streaming video.
Like Youtube & other video services, users are able to upload videos and share them with others.
Stage6 is known for users uploading full copies of movies that are still in theaters, many in HD quality. They do comply with all take down requests when copyright infringement is in question.
Many users utilize temporary e-mails to create multiple accounts to stay in ahead of bannings.

Rumors have been going around that this might be retaliation from Scientology. Interesting that the site is still down. Anyone heard anything else?

In regards to the hack, viewing the password list they released, there is great suspicion that they didn’t hack ALL the passwords. It looks more like they implemented a XSS or some social engineering hack (created a fake login screen) and collected passwords of those who fell for it. It would explain why the passwords are not encypted, as well as why it seems there are so many repeated passwords only seconds apart in the list– users trying repeatedly to login (via a fake login). Chances are, they scored an admin password at some point, which let them modify greater aspects of stage6 OR modified aspects of the site via another XSS attack. Compromised users are likely only those who have had trouble logging into stage6 at some point in the last 2 months

im so sad of what happened to stage 6. i think it whould be up and running again. we have no other place like stage 6. other downloading sites dont have that much of videos in high quality.
The day hat i saw the closing down notice i was totaly shocked.
I think I remember reading somewhere that if you download apps with an unlocked iPhone, it becomes locked again. Can I download apps and upload my music from iTunes on it without it locking? Thanks!
